Last week we mapped the behavioural barriers — status quo bias, loss aversion, trust asymmetry. This week: the specific evidence that these patterns produce in real communities, and the operational fixes that work.
When we directed generative AI at raw customer support logs, local community forums, rural parish council minutes, and highway permit objection filings across targeted postcodes, three patterns emerged that no NPS survey had captured:
The trenching workaround. Rural homeowners refusing fibre installation — not because of cost, but because standard heavy-machinery trenching threatens their gardens. The friction is aesthetic and emotional. The solution is micro-trenching, not bigger discounts.
The dual-router hack. Farmers paying for both a legacy copper connection (stability) and a 4G/5G cellular router (speed). They distrust the reliability of their local broadband provider. Take-up data records them as non-adopters; the reality is they are unsatisfied adopters of a workaround — and paying double for the privilege.
The wayleave bottleneck. Property owners withholding land access not because they want more money, but because they believe telegraph poles degrade their property's visual value. The blocker is perception of harm, not negotiation leverage. Visual impact assessments resolve it; higher fees do not.
These frictions are invisible in financial models. They are highly visible in the right qualitative data. An operator who has identified and addressed them — community by community, postcode by postcode — is demonstrably more capable of driving adoption than one running generic "upgrade to gigabit" campaigns.
